Gender & Women’s Studies
at Kennesaw State University
Gender and Women’s Studies (GWST) at Kennesaw State University is founded on the premise that gender, which takes on different forms in different times and places, centrally shapes the everyday lives of all people. Gender and Women’s Studies offers an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary curriculum that reflects the vitality of feminist and queer scholarship, while focusing on intersections with race, ethnicity, and social class. In all our work, we aspire to contribute to the mission of the Gender and Women’s Studies program at Kennesaw State University by:
- Providing leadership and support for study and research on gender and women’s issues;
- Emphasizing that gender requires careful attention to its construction in relation to other social and cultural identities;
- Promoting undergraduate research that advances an ethical sensibility and promotes a culture respectful of difference;
- Emphasizing the need for a global perspective on gender-related topics and issues;
- Envisioning outreach and partnerships with colleagues from the local community and at other institutions;
- Fostering sensibilities of social justice and activism through politically engaged learning and scholarship;
- Sharing our vision of a just society promoting open dialogue and community across all forms of difference without eliding its complexity;
- Promoting the benefits of interdisciplinary inquiry;
- Engaging in collaboration as a crucial strategy toward achieving shared goals, including team-teaching and student-faculty research;
- Maintaining a commitment to promoting the personal, intellectual, and social growth of all students, faculty, and staff at Kennesaw State University;
- Helping ensure that all Kennesaw State University community members see the university as a safe space and inclusive environment.
“I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.”
